Man arrested for bomb scare in Tenerife

The National Police has arrested a 30-year-old man in Tenerife for an assault on authority after he attacked two officers as they were arresting him for a bomb scare that turned out to be false, trying to grab their weapons as he fought them off, before hitting a third as he tried to escape.

According to the official police report, the incident took place last night in San Cristóbal de La Laguna in the north of the island, after police were called to a suspicious package on a motorbike while they were carrying out routine patrols in the area.

They were informed that an alert had been received for an explosive device on a motorbike parked on a public road, from the owner of the vehicle, who said it was a bomb.

When officers arrived at the location given, they found a man who seemed very angry and started shouting loudly at them in an aggressive manner. The policemen asked him to calm down and to identify himself but, rather than obey their request, he attacked the agents and tried to snatch their weapons.

Failing to do so, he ran away to try and escape and bumped into a third agent, who had come to inspect the place where the motorcycle was parked, and attacked him too, hitting him and throwing him to the ground.

At this point, the other two agents reduced the man to the floor and arrested him for assault. The detainee continued to try and fend them off and then kicked and headbutted the police car to try and get out, so they took him to a medical centre for treatment and drug and alcohol tests.

The results showed that the man was under the influence of narcotic substances and was showing signs of visual and auditory hallucinations. Although still under guard in the medical centre, his file has been passed to the judicial authorities for sentencing.
