A lorry driver who was under the influence of drugs ploughed into the perimeter wall of Lanzarote Airport before abandoning his vehicle and fleeing on foot through a restricted security zone.
The incident occurred at around 8.45 pm on 28th November 2025 on the LZ-2 road, at kilometre point 4.5, along the service road leading to the airport. Investigators say the driver lost control of the lorry, left the carriageway and slammed into the airport’s perimeter wall.
Instead of remaining with his vehicle, the driver ran away on foot, illegally entering the airport’s secure area. He was intercepted and restrained by airport runway staff and Guardia Civil officers from the Fiscal and Border Unit at Lanzarote Airport.
Officers later established that the same driver had already been involved in a separate road traffic accident earlier that evening, which he had also fled. During that escape, police say he drove dangerously for several kilometres, zigzagging at high speed despite the lorry being loaded with construction materials.
The man was tested for alcohol and drugs, and there was a positive result for cocaine.
The Guardia Civil’s Road Traffic Accident Investigation Unit in Arrecife investigated the driver for an alleged offence against road safety, specifically driving under the influence of narcotic substances and causing two consecutive traffic accidents.
In addition to the criminal proceedings, two administrative offences were issued for reckless driving and for failing to properly signal a hazard on the road. These carry fines totalling €580 and the loss of six points from his driving licence.
The case was passed to the court of Arrecife. Following the trial, the driver was sentenced to a driving ban for eight months and one day, along with 32 days of community service.
