The Canary Islands’ Health Department has issued an alert stating that ultraviolet (UV) radiation levels across the archipelago are unusually high, an uncommon situation for this time of year.

Authorities emphasise that sun protection is essential year-round in the Canaries, not just in summer. Even on cloudy days, UV rays penetrate through the clouds, posing a risk to skin and eye health.

Residents and tourists are advised to apply SPF 30+ sunscreen daily, stay in shaded areas, wear wide-brimmed hats, clothing that covers arms and legs, and suitable UV-protective sunglasses.

Public Health officials remind the public that sun damage is cumulative. Excessive exposure and sunburns during childhood significantly increase the risk of developing certain types of skin cancer many years later.

The Canary Islands experience the highest UV radiation levels in Spain, according to data from the Spanish Met Office (AEMET). The UV Index ranges from low to extreme, and each level is linked to specific protective recommendations under the national Preventive Action Plan for Ultraviolet Radiation.

Each week, Public Health publishes updated risk maps for the archipelago based on AEMET indicators. The current map places the islands at high risk, reinforcing the need for heightened precautions.

Health experts warn that acute effects of UV exposure include DNA damage, sunburn, phototoxic and photoallergic reactions, and immune suppression, which may reactivate viruses such as cold sores.

Long-term overexposure can lead to severe health issues including skin cancers such as melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma, as well as increased risk of eye diseases without proper eye protection.

Residents and visitors are urged to remain vigilant and practise safe sun habits, even during winter months.
