The Cabildo of Gran Canaria has declared a forest fire alert, activating the Insular Emergency Plan (PEIN) which started at 4:00pm yesterday afternoon, Thursday, November 21st.
The decision comes in response to adverse weather forecasts forecasting high temperatures and dry conditions across the island.
According to meteorological data, maximum temperatures are expected to reach approximately 31°C at altitudes above 1,000 metres in the north and over 400 metres in the south. Additional factors exacerbating the fire risk include:
Restrictions to Prevent Fire Outbreaks
To mitigate fire risks, the Cabildo has implemented several restrictions:
1. Prohibition of Open Flames: No fires are allowed in open spaces, recreational areas, campgrounds, or designated shelters, including built-in barbecue facilities.
2. Ban on Agricultural Burning: Agricultural burns, a primary cause of forest fires, are strictly prohibited.
3. Restricted Machinery Use: The use of spark-generating equipment such as chainsaws, welding tools, and brush cutters is banned in forest areas and their surroundings. Charcoal production and fire-based beekeeping are also prohibited.
Residents and visitors are urged to comply with these measures, as the island faces a potentially hazardous combination of extreme heat and dry conditions.
Upcoming Weather Forecast
The weekend is expected to bring even more intense heat, with temperatures potentially reaching 40°C in the island's midlands and mountainous areas. These extreme conditions underscore the importance of adhering to safety guidelines.
The Cabildo of Gran Canaria is appealing to the public to respect the restrictions and exercise caution to prevent accidental fires. They emphasize the critical need for vigilance during this period of heightened risk, as uncontrolled fires could have devastating consequences for the island's environment and communities.
