Scenes of panic unfolded in Puerto de la Cruz this evening (Tuesday) after a bus of British tourists became trapped in floodwaters caused by Storm Therese.

Torrential rain battering the north of Tenerife — currently under red alert for “extraordinary danger” — led to sudden flooding that left the minibus partially submerged in an area known locally as El Pulpo.

Passengers Escape Through Roof

Dramatic footage circulating on social media shows passengers attempting to escape through the roof of the bus as rising water blocked the doors.

Those inside could be heard shouting for help as the water level quickly rose, turning surrounding streets into fast-moving rivers and leaving the vehicle stranded.

Fortunately, shortly after, the fire brigade managed to rescue them using long ladders and get them all to safety, with no injuries reported at this stage.

ES-Alert

The incident coincided with the activation of the ES-Alert emergency system, which sent loud warning messages to mobile phones across the north of the island, alerting residents to the immediate threat of flooding.

Witnesses reported that the intensity of the rain caused water to surge rapidly through the streets of Puerto de la Cruz, catching people  off guard.

Authorities Urge Residents to Stay Indoors

Emergency services have reiterated urgent advice for the public to remain indoors and avoid all travel unless absolutely necessary.

Officials warn that conditions in the north of Tenerife are now critical, with forecasts of up to 60mm of rain in just one hour.

Residents and visitors are being strongly advised to:

  • Stay in safe, elevated areas
  • Avoid flooded streets and ravines
  • Never attempt to cross water, either on foot or by vehicle

Authorities stress that the situation remains extremely dangerous and are urging everyone to follow official guidance as Storm Therese continues to impact the island.
