A 65-year-old man was killed yesterday (Friday) in a paragliding accident in the Risco de Famara area of Teguise in Lanzarote, as reported by the Canary Islands Emergency and Security Coordination Centre (CECOES).

The accident occurred at around 1:00pm in a steep, remote section of the cliffs, an area well known for its dramatic terrain, challenging access, and popularity among paragliders due to its favourable winds and panoramic views over Famara beach.

Because of the difficult location, a rescue helicopter from the Emergency and Rescue Group (GES) was immediately dispatched. Upon reaching the location given, rescuers were able to access the man but quickly determined that he had suffered fatal injuries. His body was airlifted to Lanzarote Airport for formal procedures.

The Guardia Civil subsequently took charge of the deceased and opened the corresponding investigation to clarify the circumstances surrounding his death.

Paragliding is a popular activity in Lanzarote, particularly along the Famara cliffs, attracting both experienced pilots and visiting tourists. Local authorities remind residents and holidaymakers to follow all safety guidelines, seek professional guidance when necessary, and pay close attention to weather conditions, which can change rapidly along the island’s rugged coastline.
