Two storms will affect the Canary Islands from today, Monday, which will be felt on the western side of the archipelago first, in Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera, and El Hierro, until Sunday, meaning that the weather warnings already in place have been amplified according to Aemet.
The presence of high pressures over the North Atlantic is blocking the movement of storms from the west to mainland Europe, forcing them to move southwards and follow unusual trajectories through lower latitudes, where they are evolving within very unstable air masses and with high moisture content, they explained in a statement.
Two of these storms are expected to move close to the Canary Islands, leaving heavy rainfall, very strong winds and bad sea conditions. The fronts associated with the first storm have already affected the westernmost islands from yesterday afternoon, with rain that will move from west to east today across the archipelago, with an orange weather warning in place in La Palma and Tenerife, and a yellow warning in the other islands.
After the passage of this first storm it is expected to subside on Tuesday, but only temporarily as on Wednesday, a new one will leave rain and storms, especially in the west and southwest of the islands of greater relief, with strong or very strong gusts of wind, especially in high areas.
It is predicted that the storm will begin to subside on Saturday afternoon and should be clear by next Sunday, January 10th, Aemet says.
Regarding sea conditions, it is expected that from Wednesday, Three Kings Day, the northwest wind will increase in the western islands at gale force 7, gradually spreading to the eastern ones during the day, with combined swell and waves of 3 to 4 metres. During Thursday and Friday this will increase to gale force 8 increasing combined swell and waves to 5 metres.
Temperatures will be generally lower, especially at night time down to 10 degrees in parts, and daytimes will be around 18 to 19 degrees Celsius, although on Wednesday it should be slightly warmer in the reprieve between the two storms. Given the lower temperatures snow is expected on Mt Teide towards the end of the week.
