Restrictions levels stay the same in all Islands for another week

The General Directorate of Public Health has updated the ‘alert level traffic lights’ this afternoon, without making any changes to any of the islands. Some changes were possible, as Gran Canaria could have moved to Level 4, El Hierro to Level 3 and Tenerife to Level 1, but all have stayed the same until the next review on February 11th.

Lanzarote continues to be the island most affected by the measures due to its epidemiological data, and under alert Level 4 all non-essential economic activity continues to be closed from 6pm and the maximum number of people allowed to meet is two, unless they are living together. The curfew however, is the same as Level 3 which is 10pm to 6am.

Gran Canaria stays as the only island in alert Level 3, as although the island is having the ‘lion share’ of new cases, the rate of contagion has been stabilised, so it maintains its corresponding restrictions for at least one more week, for the fourth week running. These include the ‘closure of perimeter’ of the island, meaning that in Level 3 and 4 you can only enter or exit Lanzarote and Gran Canaria for essential reasons.

Tenerife, Fuerteventura and El Hierro are staying at Level 2, which although not a great surprise, there could have been changes. Tenerife’s data is sufficient to support a drop to Level 1, but there are still a large number of active cases and hospitalisations on the island, which could rebound back up again if people drop their guard and ignore health protocols.

El Hierro could have moved to Level 3 as its incidence rates are high, but in relation to the size of the population, the actual number of cases is low, which is why they stayed at Level 2. Fuerteventura has remained where it is as they are stabilising the number of cases and incidence rates on the island.

This means that the alert level restrictions are now extended until Monday February 15th with review as always on Thursday, and depending on this week’s epidemiological data changes will be made accordingly.
