Covid update: 363 new cases, Gran Canaria is spiralling with 213 today

The Ministry of Health has reported of 363 new cases of coronavirus in the Canary Islands today, with 4 Covid related deaths, two in Tenerife and two in Lanzarote. Gran Canaria now has almost the same number of active cases as Tenerife after 213 new positves were detected on the island, compared to 69 in Lanzarote and 57 in Tenerife.

Yesterday the Governing Council confirmed that Gran Canaria is staying at alert Level 3 and Lanzarote at alert Level 4 for another week, but Gran Canaria will be under review after the weekend if cases continue to spiral as they are at the moment.

Covid update: 363 new cases, Gran Canaria is spiralling with 213 todayThe Ministry of Health has extended the requirement of passengers who enter the Canary Islands from the rest of the national territory, by air or sea, to produce a negative Covid test for two more weeks, until midnight on February 15th.

The diagnostic tests for active infection permitted, at the passenger's choice, are:
- PCR (COVID-19 RT-PCR).
- Antigen rapid detection tests for SARS-CoV-2 with a specificity of more than 97% and a sensitivity of more than 80%.
- Transcription Mediated Amplification (TMA).

Tests, both at origin and destination, arefree for travellers residing in the Canary Islands who come from the rest of the national territory, and have the test at the Eurofins Megalab centres arranged by the Canary Health Service for such an effect. This extension was published in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands (BOC) today.

Good news for the Canaries:
The Canary Islands is the region with the lowest cumulative incidence in the whole of Spain according to data published by the National Geographic Information Center (IGN), and, specifically, the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, which, according to the graphs collected until yesterday afternoon, has an IA7 of 24.20 and an IA14 of 60.31. It is followed by the province of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria with a cumulative incidence of 93.63 over 7 days and 232.24 over 14 days.

On the other hand, Palencia is the Spanish city with the highest accumulated incidence at the moment. The city, located in the north of Spain, has an incidence rate over 7 days of 838.61 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, and of almost 1890 over 14 days.
