The Ministry of Health has updated all data from the weekend for the Canary Islands, registering 244 new cases today, with 4 deaths (aged between 55 and 93 years old) and 329 medical discharges, meaning that there are now 7,674 active cases still in the islands. The data below is updated from Friday’s numbers, which is why it will look like active cases, for example, have been added up wrong.
The biggest change is an obvious spike in Gran Canaria and Lanzarote, whereas Tenerife has stabilised the number of new cases, staying below 100 again.
In Gran Canaria there are 118 new cases detected today, Tenerife has 67, Lanzarote 51, Fuerteventura 9, and 1 in El Hierro. As you can see below, there is now only one of the Canary Islands below the magic number of 50 for the incidence rate over 7 days, with Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and El Hierro all over 100, and the rate for the islands as a whole has gone up to 78.39.
It’s important to emphasize that the number of cases in Tenerife has not reduced, but the rate of infection is coming down, hence the IA7 is now 68.31, even though there are still 5,252 active cases on the island, which is 68% of the total in the archipelago.
The Ministry of Health has also reported that there have been 17 deaths so far in January, and that December is the month with the most Covid related deaths with 85, since the pandemic began:
