February starts with 110 cases in Gran Canaria, 42 in Lanzarote and 24 in Tenerife

After a January that saw more infections and more deaths than any other month since the pandemic began, let’s hope that February shows signs of positive news to come for the Canary Islands as it is now almost 4 weeks since Kings Day so the ‘Christmas effect’ should be passed, and we should be entering a downward trend in the number of infections, IF people abide by the Ministry of Health regulations.

In their updated figures for today, they have detected 174 new cases in the last 24 hours, which is good news that it is below 200, with Gran Canaria again having the most with 110 cases, Lanzarote has 42, and Tenerife just 24, the second day running with less than 30 news cases.

There is more good news as the number of medical discharges, particularly in Tenerife (183), means that overall active cases have gone down in the islands, but significantly in Tenerife and Fuerteventura who have the least new cases and the most recoveries.

This is also reflected in the incidence rates, which have decreased slightly for the islands as a whole, as the key to controlling these are now down to Gran Canaria and Lanzarote. La Palma only has 3 active cases and Gomera is Covid free, Tenerife and Fuerteventura are reducing, and El Hierro is only high because of its small population. So it is down to the two islands at Level 3 and Level 4 to follow guidelines and stabilise the virus.
