Guardia Civil officers have arrested a father and his son, the latter a teenager, at the port of San Sebastián de La Gomera after they arrived from Tenerife on a ferry and failed to collect a rucksack from the luggage area, which was later found to contain half a kilo of hashish.
The incident occurred earlier this week when officers on duty at the dock noticed that nobody came forward to claim the rucksack. Given the circumstances, they became suspicious that it could be hiding something illegal. According to the police report, they then carried out various checks and enquiries to identify who the bag belonged to.
Their investigations led them to gather sufficient evidence to prove that the rucksack had been placed in the luggage hold and then deliberately abandoned by two people, a father and his son, after they realised the police presence at the port.
Both individuals have now been brought before the courts: the father before the Judicial Authority and the son before the Juvenile Prosecutor’s Office.
The Guardia Civil has highlighted that patrols and operations such as this are carried out regularly at passenger entry points in order to prevent the introduction and consumption of drugs in the popular tourist areas of the Canary Islands.
