According to the latest data from the Ministry of Health, the islands registered 272 new cases of Coronavirus yesterday with 60% (164) of the cases in Gran Canaria, 20% (56) in Lanzarote, and 11% (31) in Tenerife.
It hasn’t taken long for the situation to switch between the two main islands, as this data was reversed in December with Tenerife the epicentre and Gran Canaria on a downward slope, which is a stark warning to anyone who lets their guard down.
A month ago Santa Cruz had five times the number of cases compared to Las Palmas, but today they are all but the same. There were also 4 Covid related deaths reported yesterday, 3 in Tenerife and 1 in Gran Canaria, and 73 medical discharges.
The Ministry of Health started giving the second dose of the Pfizer vaccine yesterday to the people in group 1 of the vaccination plan, i.e. residents and staff of nursing homes. This is the same 360 people who received their first dose on December 27th, and means they will have maximum immunity in seven days time.
They have also started administering the Moderna vaccine which arrived earlier in the week, as you can see from the table below, and over 42,000 doses have now been injected.
