Work inspectors find illegal employees at several businesses in Fuerteventura

A joint operation by the National Police and the Labour and Social Security Inspectorate has revealed significant irregularities in employment practices on the island of Fuerteventura.

The inspections, carried out over three days between 24th and 26th March, focused on businesses in the municipalities of Puerto del Rosario and Antigua.

In total, 42 commercial establishments were inspected, with 167 workers identified. Authorities discovered 13 illegal workers, primarily foreign nationals without the necessary work permits, and found that eight other employees, despite having the correct paperwork, had not been registered with the Social Security system.

The operation was part of a broader initiative aimed at protecting workers' rights and curbing Social Security fraud. Officials emphasised the importance of maintaining lawful employment standards and ensuring all employees are properly documented and insured.

As a result of the findings, several companies are now facing financial penalties. The Labour and Social Security Inspectorate has issued fines amounting to €160,000 for the violations uncovered.

Inspections are ongoing, and authorities have indicated that further legal measures could be taken. If repeat offences are found, particularly the continued employment of illegal workers, criminal charges and possible arrests may follow in line with existing labour legislation.
