Residents in Costa Teguise have raised fresh concerns over a new reported case of squatters occupying an abandoned building near the Playa Roca complex, one of the main tourist areas on the east coast of Lanzarote.
According to local complaints, several people have allegedly moved into abandoned commercial units inside the vacant property, sparking fears over security, hygiene, and the growing number of neglected buildings being occupied in the area.
Neighbours say around half a dozen people have begun settling into the empty premises and are reportedly adapting the spaces for living purposes, making it the second occupied building in the surrounding area in recent times.
Local residents have told local press that they are increasingly worried about the impact the occupation could have on the neighbourhood, particularly as the building sits within an important tourist zone frequented by holidaymakers and residents alike.
Many say they are unsure about the intentions of those now staying in the property and fear the situation could develop into a permanent occupation, bringing further deterioration to the area.
Residents are now calling on local authorities to intervene quickly to prevent another abandoned building becoming permanently occupied and to address wider concerns surrounding safety and public health.
The issue of squatting, known in Spain as “okupación”, remains a highly sensitive topic across the country, particularly in tourist destinations where vacant properties and unfinished developments are more common.
