The second phase of the Tenerife Motor Circuit will be put out to tender in December

The Cabildo has announced that the second phase of the works for the Tenerife Motor Circuit will be put out to tender between December and January, as long as there aren’t any “unforeseen events".

This was announced by the vice president of the Cabildo, Enrique Arriaga, who explained that there has been a delay in the date as they have requested additional reports to give the project all the legal guarantees.

"We don't want what is happening with Cuna del Alma in Puertito de Adeje to happen again with the race track, that due to the lack of any piece of paper the project has to be stopped", he said.

It should be remembered that work has stopped at Cuna del Alma on just 2% of the site because an inspection by the Island Council detected various irregularities, as well as the destruction of an archaeological site which no measures had been taken to protect. In addition, that part of the site has two negative reports and seven protected species living in the area affected by the works, which are not mentioned in the environmental report.

Regarding the Motor Circuit project, Arriaga has detailed that the works of phase one, which includes entrances to and from the site, are “almost finished", and that those related to the second phase will begin "as soon as possible".

The new race track is being built in Atogo, in Granadilla, at an initial cost of 51 million euros, and the Cabildo has already approved expenses of more than 600,000 euros for promotion alone, even though construction has only just started.

When finished, the track will be 4.05km long and cars will be able to reach maximum speeds of 320kmh (200mph). The Cabildo says that it is an infrastructure in "high demand" by Tenerife motorsport fans, and that the facility will serve as a major tourist attraction.

However, according to those against it, it is another plan that we don’t want or don’t need and puts the population of Tenerife and the natural environment in danger.
