The General Directorate of Emergencies of the Canary Islands Government has ordered the preventive evacuation of the Parador Nacional de El Teide this morning (Sunday) because of the advance of the forest fire towards the National Park and the cable car.
In a statement, the regional government informs that this decision has been made based on the latest information regarding the evolution of the fire, and in application of Decree 60/2014, of May 29, which approves the Special Plan for Civil Protection and Emergency Attention due to Forest Fires in the Canary Islands (INFOCA).
The Parador is located within the heart of the Teide National Park, in La Orotava, at an altitude of over 2,000 meters above sea level, right in front of the volcano, and in this video, you can see how it is advancing over the ridges.
The fire has now destroyed 10,000 hectares of forest and undergrowth. Although the southern flank has been stabilized, there is concern about the front in the north of the Island, specifically in the area of La Orotava that borders the National Park.
Of the 12,000 people evacuated, 1,004 are staying in the shelters provided, and the rest are with family or friends. There are also 310 animals being looked after as well.
