The National Police successfully prevented a tragic incident by saving a woman who was attempting to jump from the balcony of her home in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, Tenerife. The swift actions of the officers on the scene were crucial in averting disaster.
The incident unfolded when officers were dispatched by the 091 operations centre to address an emergency situation. Upon arrival, they found a 45-year-old woman balanced precariously on the wall of her balcony, preparing to jump.
Neighbours were gathered below trying to shout at her to stop and had placed a mattress on the pavement to try and cushion her fall if she carried out her threat to jump.
Officers quickly entered the property, and a female officer tried to communicate with the distressed woman. Over a period of time, she managed to calm her down enough to give an opportunity for another officer to grab her and pull her to safety and prevent her from jumping or falling.
Once off the edge, it took the combined efforts of all the officers present to pull her back inside the apartment due to her significant weight and the struggle she put up.
At this point an ambulance was dispatched and medical personnel stabilised her before taking her to hospital for medical and psychological assessment, which is the protocol in this type of situation.
The National Police want people to know that their emergency hotline, 091, provides round-the-clock assistance for urgent situations, available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
