The highest temperature in the Canary Islands yesterday (Monday) was officially recorded by AEMET at 12:50pm with 39.3°C in Las Tirajanas in Gran Canaria, followed by 36.8°C at 2:00pm in Tejeda.
However, if the daytime was hot, the night before (between Sunday and Monday) was relentless as it did not drop below 26.5°C in Lomo Pedro Alfonso (San Bartolomé de Tirajana) or 25.4°C in Las Tirajanas.
Today, Tuesday, another day and night of high temperatures are expected, with an active red warning for the heat from the Ministry of Health in Mogán, San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Santa Lucía de Tirajana, and Tejeda, all in Gran Canaria.
The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) have also activated weather warnings for today (Tuesday), for high temperatures in the rest of Gran Canaria, and in Tenerife and Fuerteventura, between 11:00am and 8:00pm.
In the east, south, and west of Gran Canaria, temperatures in excess of 36 degrees are expected again today, and 34°C in Fuerteventura and Tenerife, mainly affecting the centre and the southern half of both islands.
Warning for coastal phenomena:
There is also a yellow notice today from AEMET for coastal phenomena in most of the archipelago, except Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. It is in force from this morning and will last all day.
Big waves, strong currents, and deep swells are all expected so people are advised to act responsibly and observe the colour of the flags on beaches and in bathing areas to avoid getting into trouble in the sea.
