New visa is being launched to make it easier to work in Spain

Spain may soon become the latest European country to launch its ‘Digital Nomad Visa’, meaning that people from outside the EU, including the UK, can live and work remotely from Spain for clients or businesses located outside the country.

In the latest report provided by We Forum, it has been emphasised that in the Startup Act, which has been passed by the Spanish parliament, all non-EU citizens are eligible to apply for a special visa to work in Spain as digital nomads for more than five years.

It also confirms that the normal rate of income tax (25%) will be reduced to 15% for the first four years they are here, provided that no more than a fifth of their income comes from companies based in Spain.

Even though it has not officially been launched, the Spanish Digital Nomad visa will be open to existing companies, start-ups, and investors in an attempt to bring talented people to the country while making it more attractive for foreigners who want to work remotely.

Spain announced the launching of the Digital nomad visa scheme last month, as earlier this year authorities estimated that such a visa would bring significant benefits to the country’s economic sector following Covid.

During the pandemic, a huge increase was seen in working remotely in a large number of countries. According to a survey of Two Tickets to Anywhere, there are currently about 35 million digital nomads in different countries, with the most popular destination for them being the United States.

However, the Digital Nomad Visa is gaining popularity in European countries as well. Up to now, Croatia, Estonia, Portugal, and Iceland are considered among the most favourite destinations for digital nomads in the EU.
