Property owners in Puerto Calero urged to act on marina extension plans

The Puerto Calero Owners Association in Yaiza, Lanzarote, is asking boat berth, apartment, and business premises owners to submit any concerns about a proposed 35-year extension to the marina’s operating agreement.

The current concession, which was originally granted by the Council of Ministers in July 1985, is due to expire in September.

The extension proposal has been on public display since 12th June, with the deadline for submitting objections set for next Saturday, 12th July. The Association is urging affected parties to act before the cut-off date to ensure their concerns are officially taken into consideration.

The original 40-year agreement allowed Lanzarote’s first marina to be built and played a key role in the growth of tourism and development in southern Yaiza. The new extension, under Spanish law, can only be approved if it clearly serves the public interest.

The Owners Association says that while Puerto Calero is a public asset, any new agreement must fairly balance economic growth, environmental protection, and the rights of everyone who uses the marina.

The association stated, “There are valid concerns that the new terms of the concession could affect the conditions, pricing, or permitted use of the facilities.” They also warned that any future decisions must not favour one party at the expense of others who have helped shape the marina over the past four decades.

The association is advising owners to formally register any rights they may hold over their properties or usage agreements and to submit their objections before the deadline, as this is the only way to ensure they are protected from possible negative impacts.

Owners are encouraged to send individual submissions or, preferably, to present them collectively through the Association to help safeguard collective interests. For assistance or clarification, the Association can be contacted at: propietariospuertocalero@gmail.com.

They have also invited owners who are not yet members to join the Association and take an active role in protecting the long-term interests of all stakeholders at Puerto Calero.
