A new health centre costing almost €10 million has been approved for Corralejo in Fuerteventura, in a move aimed at improving healthcare services for the growing population in the north of the island.
The Canary Islands Health Service has awarded the €9.92 million construction contract for the new Corralejo II Dunas Health Centre, which will serve residents in the La Oliva area.
Officials say the project is partly funded by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund programme for 2021–2027. Construction is expected to take 23 months once work officially begins.
The new building will cover around 3,500 square metres and will be built on a single floor to improve accessibility for patients, including older residents and people with reduced mobility.
The centre will include family doctor and nursing consultation rooms, paediatric services, emergency treatment facilities, observation rooms and areas for minor surgery and diagnostic tests.
Additional services will include women’s healthcare, physiotherapy, dental care and conventional radiology, along with administrative and staff facilities.
The Director of Fuerteventura’s Health Area, Tomás Pérez, said the project is needed due to the rapid population growth seen in recent years in the municipality of La Oliva.
