A man was taken to hospital after being seriously injured during an alleged assault by a group of young people in Plaza de España, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The attack happened on Sunday night after the group reportedly began verbally abusing the man's sister before turning on him when he stepped in to defend her.
According to reports, around five members of the group assaulted the man using objects including belts. He suffered a broken nose and a cut to his lip that required stitches, and was treated at the emergency department of Doctor Negrín University Hospital.
The incident took place near Plaza de España, close to a well-known fast-food restaurant on Mesa y López. The brother and sister were walking through the area when the confrontation began.
The attackers fled before National Police officers arrived at the scene. Police have confirmed that none of the suspects have yet been identified, although the investigation remains ongoing and the case has been referred to the judicial authorities.
The victim's sister has since appealed on social media for witnesses or anyone with photos or video footage of the incident to come forward. In her appeal, she described the attackers as a large group of youths of North African appearance.
