National Geographic names one of Fuerteventura's beaches the Best in the World
The Canary Islands have once again taken centre stage on the global tourism map, as National Geographic has crowned Corralejo Beach in Fuerteventura the best beach on the planet.
The prestigious magazine has placed Corralejo ahead of globally renowned destinations such as Sarakiniko Beach on the Greek island of Milos (2nd place) and Stiniva Cove in Croatia (3rd) in its latest edition.
According to National Geographic, the selection serves not only as a “paradise atlas” but also as a “call to global environmental conservation.”
The recognition highlights the remarkable natural beauty and ecological importance of Corralejo, situated within the protected Parque Natural de las Dunas de Corralejo (Corralejo Dunes Natural Park) in northern Fuerteventura. The area is celebrated for its expansive golden sands and its allure for nature lovers, sun-seekers, and water sports enthusiasts alike.
"It is one of the most seductive areas of the Canary Islands," the article states, praising the beach's “long stretches of golden sand” and its setting within one of the archipelago’s most ecologically valuable regions. The nearby Isla de Lobos (Lobos Island), a designated nature reserve, also gets a special mention for its underwater richness, highly valued by divers.
The magazine describes Corralejo’s unique blend of environmental treasures as “the secret that elevates one of Spain’s finest beaches to the altar of the world’s coastal wonders.”
The article also notes other highlights in Fuerteventura, including Costa Calma, located at the opposite end of the island. With its nearly two-kilometre stretch of sand that can be walked end-to-end at low tide, Costa Calma adds to Fuerteventura’s growing reputation as a top-tier beach destination.
With this latest recognition, the Canary Islands continue to solidify their position as one of Europe’s most desirable holiday regions, combining dramatic landscapes, rich biodiversity, and pristine beaches that rival those of the most exotic corners of the globe.
