Mercadona opens new store in Central Market in Las Palmas

Mercadona officially opened its new store in the Central Market of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria yesterday (Thursday), located on Calle Galicia. The building of this supermarket, which employs a staff of 55, has involved an investment of over 11 million euros, covering direct, indirect, and occupancy costs. Furthermore, 35 suppliers participated in its construction, employing 160 people in the process.

This marks a significant milestone for the company as it is the first supermarket it has opened within a municipal market in the Canary Islands.

Mercadona, which advocates for the coexistence of various commercial formats as a key factor in neighbourhood development, has been firmly committed to the revitalization of municipal markets for over two decades. This commitment is evident in the 36 stores it managed in such environments across Spain as of the end of 2022.

This new supermarket incorporates the company's efficient store model, already available in 35 locations within the province, allowing for a reduction of up to 40% in energy consumption compared to the conventional store model. In this regard, it includes improvements in both thermal and acoustic insulation, along with an automated LED lighting system that adjusts according to zones and times of day, ensuring much more responsible energy management.

Additionally, as part of its contribution to the renovation of the municipal market, Mercadona has installed solar panels on the roof of the Central Market, aligning with its commitment to complement energy demand with renewable sources, thereby reducing emissions and improving the environmental performance of both the store and the entire municipal market.

Open from Monday to Saturday, from 9:00am to 9:30pm, the store features a deli section with freshly sliced and packaged ham, a central display for specialized cosmetics in the perfumery department, freshly squeezed orange juice service, sushi specialities, a new bakery section with a bread slicer, and refrigerated pastries, among other innovations.

It also includes the "Ready to Eat" section, offering takeaway dishes served in containers made from natural materials such as sugar cane (compostable material), cardboard, or paper. The company has provided a resting area with tables and chairs where "Jefes" (as Mercadona refers to its customers) can enjoy freshly prepared dishes accompanied by cold beverages.
