Man killed after his vehicle plunges into 800-metre-deep ravine

A man, whose age has not been specified, tragically lost his life around midday yesterday (Monday) when the vehicle he was driving plunged into a ravine in the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, in the south of Gran Canaria, as reported by the Emergency Services Coordination Centre (CECOES).

The vehicle fell into a hard-to-reach area at Lomo de Pedro Alfonso in the southern part of the municipality. A GES helicopter was deployed to rescue any potential victims, but unfortunately, the only person in the vehicle, the driver, was found dead when the rescue teams arrived at the scene.

CECOES received an alert at approximately 11:50am informing them that a vehicle had veered off the road and fallen down an 800-metre-deep ravine. Consequently, all necessary resources were mobilised to the location given.

Ground teams were unable to reach it due to the difficult terrain, so the helicopter approached the vehicle. The sole occupant was found to have sustained fatal injuries. With judicial authorisation, the body was recovered by the helicopter crew and flown to El Berriel aerodrome.

The Guardia Civil are conducting the necessary investigations to determine the possible causes of the accident.
