A major new five-star hotel development is set for southern Gran Canaria, with Lopesan confirming plans for a 160,000m² complex featuring 953 rooms in Meloneras. The new complex will target the family and luxury market.

Engineering firm TYPSA has announced it has secured the architectural construction contract for the project, known as the Lopesan Meloneras Family. The hotel will be located in Maspalomas, one of the island’s leading tourist areas.

160,000m² of Five-Star Facilities

With its scale and capacity, the project will rank among the largest new hotel developments planned in southern Gran Canaria in recent years.

The size of the plot allows for expansive communal areas, green spaces and integrated leisure services, designed to create a self-contained resort experience, and will include:

  • 953 guest rooms
  • Extensive landscaped gardens
  • Multiple swimming pools
  • Four restaurants
  • Commercial and leisure areas

Part of Meloneras Revival

The project forms part of a broader urban and tourism revival in Meloneras.

In 2025, Ayuntamiento de San Bartolomé de Tirajana approved planning changes that unlocked the long-stalled Meloneras 2A sector — an area that had been tied up in planning restrictions for more than two decades.

The revised urban plan paved the way for an estimated €700 million in public-private investment and is expected to generate thousands of jobs. It also opens up over 300,000m² of public land for schools, healthcare facilities, sports areas and green spaces.

3,600 New Tourist Beds Planned

The wider Meloneras development strategy includes around 3,600 new tourist beds, alongside the expansion of existing hotels such as Villa del Conde and the construction of additional high-end complexes.

The planning changes also allow for individual plot development, meaning projects can move forward independently rather than relying on large joint operations — a key factor in accelerating investment.

No Opening Date Yet

While the confirmation of TYPSA’s contract marks a significant step forward, no construction timeline or official opening date has yet been announced.

For residents and visitors in Gran Canaria, however, the message is clear: Meloneras is entering a new phase of large-scale tourism investment, with one of the island’s biggest hotel groups doubling down on the south’s long-term growth.
