Police have identified two men suspected of stealing a boat worth around €45,000 from a marina in Mogán, Gran Canaria, before it was later discovered drifting far from the coast.

The investigation began after the owner reported that the boat had disappeared from its mooring. Officers examined security camera footage from the marina to establish what had happened.

Security footage reportedly showed two people entering the marina while concealing their identities. The police believe they were working together to steal the boat; one of them managed to start the boat before taking it out of the harbour.

Police then examined further footage, spoke to witnesses and carried out additional checks. These enquiries reportedly placed one of the suspects near the marina at the time the boat was taken.

The investigation continued for several months as officers reconstructed the suspects' movements and gathered further evidence linking them to the incident.

The missing boat was eventually found drifting at sea by another sailor in waters some distance from the coast. It was subsequently recovered, allowing investigators to continue examining the circumstances surrounding its disappearance.

Two men are now under investigation on suspicion of theft. Police have not ruled out the possibility that other people may have been involved, and enquiries remain ongoing.

The case has been passed to the investigating court in San Bartolomé de Tirajana, which will oversee the next stage of the judicial proceedings.
