Gran Tarajal care home project moves forward with €15.2 million investment

The Fuerteventura Cabildo has approved a €15.2 million contract to design, build, and equip the new Gran Tarajal Socio-Health Residence (care home). This much-needed facility will add 90 care places for the island’s elderly and dependent residents.

Cabildo President, Lola García, shared the news calling it a big step forward in meeting the island’s growing demand for social and healthcare services. She highlighted the teamwork between the Social Action, Contracting, and Infrastructure departments, which helped speed up the project.

The site, located in Aceitún, was made available thanks to cooperation with Tuineje Town Council.

The Cabildo is also working on plans for a new Day Centre in Costa Calma and another care home in the Antigua-Betancuria area, both in partnership with the local councils.

The project has been awarded to the joint venture Ecología y Construcción Fesumar SL-José Díaz García SA and is being co-financed by the Cabildo, the Canary Islands Government, and the European Union’s Recovery and Resilience Mechanism (MRR) funds.

According to Víctor Alonso, Minister of Social Action, the new facility will be a high-quality space designed to meet the needs of elderly residents, providing them with a safe and comfortable environment.

The residence will be built on a 4,701-square-metre plot in Valle del Aceitún and will consist of two sections. The Socio-Health Residence will have space for 60 residents, offering 24-hour care all year round, while the Day Care Centre will support 30 elderly dependents.

The focus will be on personalised care, with support available for both individuals and families. The facility will offer accommodation, meals, round-the-clock assistance, medical and healthcare services, occupational therapy, psychological care, and a range of activities to improve residents’ quality of life.
