The Fuerteventura Cabildo has announced the introduction of eight new buses to its public transport fleet starting in April, with an additional three electric buses expected before the end of summer.
The news was revealed by the island's Transport Councillor, Luis González, during a plenary session held on Friday (28 February 2025).
The expansion of the bus fleet is part of a broader strategy by the Transport Department to enhance public transportation services on the island. According to González, the main goals are to increase the number of vehicles and increase the frequency of services.
In the last six months of 2024, a partnership with the concessionary transport company enabled the fleet to grow from 49 to 52 buses. The new additions in April will further strengthen the service, particularly on days when cruise ships arrive, which significantly boosts demand on the island.
The arrival of the electric buses marks a historic milestone for Fuerteventura, as these will be the first electric public transport vehicles on the island. Funded by the European Union's Next Generation initiative, they operate a direct route between Puerto del Rosario's main bus station and Fuerteventura Airport, with a potential extension to El Castillo.
The new initiative is part of a larger modernisation effort that saw ten old buses replaced in 2024 with newer, more environmentally friendly models. The project aligns with the Cabildo’s vision to provide a modern, accessible, and sustainable public transport system for Fuerteventura.
