Fuerteventura's medical helicopter service is coming soon

The President of the Fuerteventura Cabildo, Lola García, has announced the exciting news that a medical helicopter service based on the island is on its way to becoming a reality.

This came after a productive meeting with Carlos Díaz, the Deputy Minister of Health and Director of the Canary Islands Health Service, at the General Hospital in Puerto Rosario.

The tender for this crucial service will be launched within a month, following last year’s unsuccessful attempt. The Canary Islands Government has since revised the project and boosted funding to ensure it goes ahead this time.

García celebrated this development, noting that the helicopter service addresses a long-standing need in Fuerteventura. She emphasized its role in improving emergency care and stressed the importance of continuing efforts to cut down waiting lists on the island.

The meeting also brought together managers from various public hospitals across the archipelago and Tomás Pérez, the Minister of Health in Fuerteventura, to discuss the services provided by the Canary Islands Health Service.

Moreover, García highlighted the urgent need for a Specialised Care Centre in the south of the island, with plans already underway to initiate the tender process. She expressed hope that these and other healthcare facilities will progress this year.

On another note, the Radiotherapy Oncology Unit at the Fuerteventura General Hospital has been making significant strides. Since it began operations in June 2022, it has treated 490 patients, delivered 6,495 radiotherapy sessions, and conducted more than 3,100 follow-up consultations.
