Fuerteventura Cabildo initiates regulation of buggies and quad bikes on the island

The Cabildo de Fuerteventura has begun the process of regulating the commercial use of vehicles, particularly jeeps, buggies, and quad bikes, on the official network of routes in protected areas on the island.

This initiative aims to balance tourism and environmental preservation by introducing a controlled system for their access.

Interested parties have until 14th February 2025 to submit their applications under the newly launched scheme. The process involves a public ballot to allocate limited permits valid for three years.

Applications opened yesterday (27th January), and eligible participants will be drawn randomly to determine access rights for each route.

The allocation system, which applies to individual routes, is based on proposals from local councils regarding both the number and location of the routes.

Lola García, President of the Fuerteventura Cabildo, emphasised the importance of safeguarding the island’s natural environment:
"We must strictly respect the fragility of our territory and prevent the overexploitation of sensitive areas. It is essential to harmonise tourism and commercial activities with environmental care."

Nereida Calero, the councillor for Territorial Planning, echoed these sentiments, stating:
"Our work goes beyond planning the island; we are designing proper use for different types of land. Regulation is necessary to achieve a balance between protecting the environment and allowing people to enjoy it."

The process includes strict conditions. Only one company per business group is eligible to apply, and applicants must comply with regulations for active tourism in the Canary Islands. They must also provide proof of valid public liability insurance covering at least €600,000 per incident and pay the relevant fees.

Successful applicants will be informed of their allocated routes and time slots through the council’s electronic platform. Businesses must operate strictly within their designated areas to ensure minimal environmental impact.

This new regulatory effort demonstrates Fuerteventura's commitment to sustainable tourism and the preservation of its unique natural landscapes.
