Cueva del Viento: One of Tenerife’s hidden gems that most people don’t know about

La Cueva del Viento is one of Tenerife’s hidden gems, that most visitors to the island, and residents to be fair, don’t know exists. It is the largest lava tube system in Europe, and the sixth largest in the world, behind a series of lava tubes in Hawaii. It is also considered the most complex volcanic tube in the world, due to its morphology of several levels and passages.

With this in mind, Museos de Tenerife opened the tubes to the public in 2008 and this week it celebrates its 15th year of showing visitors the secrets in the bowels of the Pico Viejo volcano through a section of approximately 200 metres of the tube.

The Cueva del Viento is located in the middle of the Icod de Los Vinos Valley, and last year more than 24,000 people visited it and experienced its extraordinary geological and biological wealth.

This volcanic tube is more than 18.5km long in the lava fields of the Pico Viejo volcano, which are 27,000 years old and despite the location of this cave, devoid of light or artificial sounds.

The tour takes two and a half hours with multilingual guides who will take you to the moment where the volcanic tube was formed, and guide you through the eruption that formed it, resulting in the evolution of one of the most spectacular geomorphological structures in the Canary Islands.

Over the last 15 years, Museos de Tenerife have improved this experience so that visitors can enjoy all the natural beauty of the Cueva del Viento, studying possible new routes, in a clear commitment to guarantee its conservation and generate greater awareness of protection among visitors.
