Residents and visitors in Amarilla Golf a coastal residential and tourist area in San Miguel de Abona, in the south of Tenerife, will have to wait until the end of the year before long-running roadworks on one of the main access routes to the golf are finally completed.
The works, which have been going on for more than two years, are being carried out by Sociedad Mercantil Estatal de Aguas de las Cuencas de España as part of a major wastewater and sewage improvement project linked to the Montaña Reverón treatment plant.
Traffic lights causing frustration
The disruption centres on the construction of a wastewater Treatment, Pumping and Storage Station (ETBAR), included in Phase 4 of the wider Arona East–San Miguel sanitation upgrade project, which feeds into the EDAR Montaña Reverón wastewater treatment facility.
Pipes running to the Las Chafiras pumping station and the land outfall have had to be laid alongside the main access road into Amarilla Golf. This has required traffic diversions and temporary traffic lights at both ends of the works.
Residents have complained that the traffic light system can add more than 10 minutes to journeys in and out of the area, causing huge frustration for those commuting daily or relying on timely access for work and services.
Some relief expected next month
Although the overall project is not due to be completed until December 2026, Acuaes has indicated that traffic conditions should improve much sooner.
The company says it expects to remove the traffic diversions and temporary lights from the main access road next month, restoring normal circulation — even though work will continue in other sections of Phase 4.
Officials have stressed that, wherever technically possible, pipework has been installed outside the carriageway to avoid damaging the road surface. However, underground services and the area’s terrain have made it necessary in some sections to dig into the roadway itself.
In those areas, temporary concrete surfacing has been laid to reopen the road quickly. At a later stage, this will be removed, and the asphalt will be fully resurfaced and reinstated.
Key infrastructure project
The ultimate aim of the works is to bring into service a modernised system of pumping stations and collectors that will channel wastewater from the southeast coast to the Montaña Reverón treatment plant.
The project is seen as a key step in improving sanitation infrastructure in the area and completing the wastewater treatment cycle for this growing part of southern Tenerife.
For now, however, residents of Amarilla Golf will need to remain patient until it is completed.
