La Orotava has brought back one of the town’s most famous traditions for the first time in three years due to the pandemic, with the giant Roscón de Reyes on the eve of the visit of the three kings from the east. The presentation of the huge donut-based sweet is in its eleventh edition, and has exceeded the measurements of previous years.
When it first started there were approximately 100 metres of roscón which were exceeded every year, until the biggest on January 2020 which was 310 metres of succulent donut.
On this occasion, in which it is celebrated again for the first time in three years, the record has been broken again and 570 metres have been produced, making it the largest Roscón de Reyes ever made in the Canary Islands, and one of the largest in Spain.
The giant treat has been made up of around 700 pieces and has weighed approximately 1,700 kilos. In just two and a half hours yesterday afternoon (Wednesday), some 5,600 portions of the roscón and nearly 500 litres of chocolate were served.
In some portions, people also found some surprise gifts, donated by local businesses in La Orotava, and throughout the afternoon there was also entertainment on Avenida Emilio Luque in front of the La Milagrosa School, with various musical performances.
The Manobuena pastry shop was in charge of the 1,200 kilos of pastry cream for the Rosco (donut) mix, while the Jovita bakery made the dough using more than 300 kilos of flour; 20 kilos of fresh yeast; 15 litres of egg whites and 5 litres of egg yolk; 15 litres of orange juice; more than 150 kilos of candied and dried fruit; 50 kilos of orange, and other ingredients such as margarine, cinnamon, sugar, vanilla, rum, water, milk, and lemon.
The whole event is voluntary and is to support the work of the Red Cross, and all monies from the Roscón and glass of chocolate go to them, and it has become a benchmark for Kings Day in the North of Tenerife. This is definitely a date to put in your diary for next year.
