A 68-year-old man dies from drowning in Corralejo

A 68-year-old man died yesterday afternoon (Friday) after drowning in the Grandes Playas area of Corralejo in Fuerteventura, according to the Emergency Services Coordination Centre (CECOES).

They have reported that they received multiple calls at around 12:15pm requesting medical help for a man who had been retrieved from the water by fellow beachgoers showing signs of drowning and in a state of cardiac arrest.

A coordinating SUC doctor in the 112 emergency call centre conducted the necessary inquiries with one of the callers and confirmed the man’s condition from the symptoms given, then provided assistance and instructions over the phone on how to perform resuscitation manoeuvres until medical support arrived on the scene.

After arriving at the beach, paramedics and personnel from the local health centre verified that the 68-year-old was still in a state of cardiac arrest and continued with advanced CPR in an effort to revive him.

Unfortunately, after trying everything possible, they had to admit defeat and could only confirm the man’s death on the beach. His body has now been removed for official identification and an autopsy to confirm the cause of his death.
