A 69-year-old man has died following a tragic head-on collision early this morning on the FV-2 road in Fuerteventura. The accident occurred at kilometre 10 near Caleta de Fuste, in the municipality of Antigua, and involved the man's car and a bus travelling in the opposite direction.
The Emergency and Security Coordination Centre (CECOES) received an alert at 8:45am and dispatched the necessary resources to the location given. Upon arrival, first responders found the car’s driver in cardiac arrest, so paramedics began immediate resuscitation techniques. Unfortunately, despite their best efforts, they were unable to revive him, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Fortunately, none of the passengers on board the bus sustained any injuries. Firefighters provided assistance at the scene, and the Guardia Civil has now taken charge of the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash, and took charge of the man’s body until the judicial authorities gave permission for it to be taken for an autopsy.
This latest incident adds to a troubling history of serious accidents along the FV-2, raising renewed concerns about safety on this key stretch of road on the island.
In February 2022, a fatal head-on collision near Tuineje claimed one life, while another crash in May of the same year, also involving a bus and a car near Antigua, resulted in another fatality. Most recently, earlier this month, a multi-vehicle collision at kilometre 9 led to several people being seriously injured.
