A five-year-old boy was airlifted to hospital on Wednesday evening after being rescued from a swimming pool at a hotel complex in Mogán, in the south of Gran Canaria.

The emergency unfolded shortly after 6.00pm when the Canary Islands emergency coordination centre, CECOES, received reports that a child had been pulled from the water showing signs of drowning.

According to emergency services, the hotel lifeguard provided the boy with immediate first aid and managed to stabilise him until paramedics arrived at the scene.

After being stabilised at the hotel, the child was transferred by medical ambulance to the harbour in Arguineguín, where a helicopter was waiting to carry out an emergency airlift.

The boy was then flown directly to the Hospital Universitario Materno Infantil de Canarias in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria for further treatment.

Medical staff said the child suffered moderate drowning symptoms, pending any further complications.

The incident has once again highlighted the importance of pool safety and rapid emergency response, particularly as hotels and resorts across the Canary Islands become increasingly busy ahead of the summer season.
