Maritime Rescue were called to an emergency late on Saturday night (New Years Eve) after receiving an SOS from a privately owned sailing boat, that had run aground on rocks near the shore of Playa del Inglés, in the south of Gran Canaria.
The Helimer 206 helicopter was sent to airlift 10 people from the boat after a New Years Eve party on board went wrong, and the yacht got stranded on rocks, inaccessible by sea, hence the need for air assistance.
Crew successfully airlifted them all to safety in the dark of night and flew them to the Berriel aerodrome, where they were met by the Canary Islands Health Service (SUC) and assessed by paramedics without any of them needing to go to hospital for treatment.
Not the way the revellers on the boat or emergency rescuers wanted to bring in the New Year, but fortunately, no-one was injured in the incident.
