LA PALMA: Scientists confirm that the volcano has less and less energy

Scientists tracking the evolution of the volcano in La Palma, have confirmed they are continuing to observe a decrease in the different parameters associated with the eruption, i.e. seismicity, amplitude of the tremor, land deformation, and sulphur dioxide emission levels, which are showing that the eruption “has less and less energy".

The director of the National Geographic Institute (IGN) in the Canary Islands and spokesperson for the Pevolca Scientific Committee, María José Blanco, said that although it is true that there is an almost continuous decrease in these values, in recent weeks there have been peaks in some of the parameters, particularly seismicity.

Therefore, she reiterated that we must be patient and wait for there to be "a sustained downward trend over a longer period of time of these parameters before we can estimate when the end of the eruption will be.”

In the case of sulphur dioxide (SO2) emissions, she clarified that, although high levels are still being observed, they are lower than on previous days, but reiterated that it still has to go down considerably before it reaches, what can be classed as, a really low level.
