VIDEO: They reiterate the danger of volcanic ‘bombs’ on La Palma

The La Palma volcanic eruption has now been going for 40 days and isn’t yet showing signs of easing up; in fact there is now something else for emergency services workers, residents, and visitors to the area to be wary of, as large balls of pyroclastic material with a temperature of over 1,000°C are being thrown like bombs from the volcano and then are rolling down the slopes at high speed, and are capable of killing someone.

Nieves Sánchez, a geologist at the Geological and Mining Institute of Spain (IGME), reiterated on Televisión Canaria today, the need to make the population aware of the danger of volcanic bombs, which are “large pyroclasts emitted by the eruption”.

Due to their "large size, speed, and high temperatures, it is obviously necessary not to get too close to them as they are projectiles thrown hundreds of metres by the volcano. However, not only do you have to be aware near the eruption, but also the paths through which they can roll, because they reach great speed”.

Below is a video that was shown during her television interview which shows the size and speed that these materials can reach:
