Vaccination is taking effect, incidence rate in over 65’s is now at low risk

The effects of vaccination are starting to be seen in all the epidemiological indicators of the archipelago that are studied to access alert levels, from the decrease in hospital admissions to the occupation of ICU beds. One that has had a notable change is the incidence of infections in people over 65 years of age, the population group with the highest percentage of immunization against Covid-19.

The cumulative incidence in this age group is now at low risk over both seven and fourteen days, with 18.23 and 32.75 cases per 100,000 inhabitants respectively, for the Canary Islands as a whole. When this parameter is analyzed for the entire population, the traffic light is at medium risk, with an IA7 of 38.56 and an IA14 of 83.04 showing that it is no longer the ‘older’ age group that are transmitting the virus.

By islands, all have the rate of infections among people over 65 at low or minimal risk, except Tenerife which is at medium risk in its cumulative incidence over seven days with 29.32 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The limit is 25 for minimal risk.

The vaccination plan is now advancing at a rapid rate with almost a million doses administered by the SCS and over 309,000 people fully immunised, the 50 to 59 age group has started in all islands and people in their 40’s are being vaccinated already in El Hierro.

In the first 48 hours of being activated, over 220,000 people aged between 16 and 49 have registered on the Ministry Of Health website for a future vaccination appointment, which represents 40% of the remaining target population. A schedule will still be organised by age group, but this way of application helps speed up the process now that more vaccines are available.

They are also requesting that anyone over 50 now call 012 for an appointment as scheduling has been done.
