All of the Canary Islands are currently under an extreme risk alert due to high levels of ultraviolet (UV) solar radiation. This situation is expected to persist at least until Monday, 30th June, when updated measurements will be released.
The Canary Islands Ministry of Health, through its ‘Canarias Saludable’ platform, has issued strong recommendations to minimise direct sun exposure during this period of extreme risk.
Dark clothing and sun cream advised
Health officials remind the public that from a ‘very high’ UV risk level, which is just one step below the current ‘extreme’ status, it is advisable to wear dark-coloured, long-sleeved clothing that fully covers the skin. Even at moderate risk levels, people are urged to apply sunscreen with a minimum protection factor of SPF 30.
Additionally, the public are encouraged to wear sunglasses on bright days to protect their eyes. From moderate levels upwards, seeking shade is recommended, while during high and extreme UV periods, it is particularly important to keep babies out of direct sunlight.
Authorities stress the need for residents and visitors alike to take these precautions seriously to reduce the risk of sunburn, skin damage and longer-term health issues.
The Ministry will continue to monitor UV levels closely and issue updates as necessary.
