If it seemed that the curve of this fifth wave of the pandemic had stabilized in the Canary Islands, following the number of infections on Monday (606) and Tuesday (696), yesterday's data once again places the region in a worrying situation: 943 infections with cases on all islands. In addition, seven of the eight health alert parameters of the archipelago are already at high or very high risk.

The occupation of ICUs by Covid is now at high risk of 15.32%, and in Tenerife, not only are the intensive care units saturated at very risk high with 25.27% occupancy with Covid patients, but also the occupancy of Covid beds on wards is high risk at 10.57%, and is the only island with all indicators at the maximum level.

To these alarming numbers we must add the death of three more people from Covid yesterday, an 87-year-old man and two women, a 45-year-old in Gran Canaria and a 78-year-old in La Palma, bringing the total number of Covid related deaths in the archipelago to 817, with six in the last two days.

At the moment on the islands, there are 12,523 people who have tested positive for Covid, to whom the SCS has sent an SMS message with the isolation instructions. In total there are more than 500 people admitted to hospitals, 436 in the ward and 71 in ICU.

Lanzarote is currently the only island that maintains the health alert parameters at medium, low or minimal risk. La Palma, like Tenerife, also has the occupancy of the ICUs with Covid patients at very high risk and the beds in wards at high risk. And finally, traceability is at high risk in Tenerife and El Hierro.

Torres said on his way to the Governing Council meeting this morning: “We are going to continue making decisions based on the advice that the scientists and experts give is to stop the infections. We are very close to 1,000 positives every day, one day we have surpassed it.”

In relation to the words of the Minister of Health for Spain, Carolina Darias, who reminded that vaccination in Spain is not compulsory, Torres points out that “I have also said that vaccination is not compulsory, but I have added that public officials have to be the first to set an example and be vaccinated. Macron said it, Biden said it. I sincerely believe that the majority of Canarian society shares this idea", recalling that "those who are not vaccinated have many possibilities of infecting others."

The Canarian president also wanted to praise the attitude of young people, "who are flocking to get vaccinated." In relation to herd immunity, the Canarian president has indicated that “we will achieve it in a matter of days. Now more vaccines are arriving because we have more young population to vaccinate.”
