Torres expects the UK to add the Canary Islands to green list before June

The president of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, has said this afternoon (Tuesday) that the Canaries Government expects that on June 7th, or earlier, the United Kingdom will include the Canary Islands on their green list for travel so that British tourists can easily holiday in the archipelago, with an announcement in the next few days.

This was in response to a question from the deputy of the Socialist group, Nira Fierro, about the tourism prospects for the Canary Islands after the celebration of Fitur 2021, which the president confirmed that “they are good and very different from previous months before.”

Torres recalled commitments, such as, that in the summer 70% of the population will be vaccinated, and 70% of the tourist occupation that existed in 2019 will be reached, and stressed that connectivity has been ensured for the summer months with the mainland as well as other countries including Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands.

Nira Fierro said that the best policy to reactivate the economy of the islands is to have good health data, and indicated that expectations improve as the pandemic is contained and the vaccination plan advances, which is endorsed by the downward trend in the Canaries right now.

Yaiza Castilla added that “the recovery of national tourism is a fact or at least we are on the way for it to be”, and said that “the demand for travel seems positive as searches are increasing, especially for the summer but for short breaks.”

Ricardo Fernández de la Puente, from Ciudadanos, has acknowledged that celebrating Fitur has been positive, although it has been in a "quite gloomy" environment due to the uncertainty generated by the new normality, and has shown his concern of the "triumphunt" air of the Canarian government.

He said that the sector is not in the same line as the regional government, and has pointed out that there are more reservations for the summer of 2022 than for that of 2021, and has asked the Minister of Tourism to publish the data of programmed places, something to which Yaiza Castilla replied can be seen on AENA’s website.
