Tenerife and Gran Canaria start Level 2 today just 12 days before Christmas

With just two weeks until Christmas, a time that will see more people on the streets and in shopping centres, Tenerife and Gran Canaria have moved into Level 2 restrictions today, due to the increased incidence of Covid, and Tenerife is once again at the forefront of the new daily infections with 273 of the 556 new cases announced yesterday, well ahead of Gran Canaria, where 197 cases were reported in the last 24 hours.

These figures are terrible, to the point that even though today the two islands rise to Level two, if this upward trend continues, they will soon be at Level 3, joining Fuerteventura, while the rest of the islands remain in Level 1, as announced on Friday by the Regional Vice President of the Canary Islands, Antonio Olivera.

The level change came into force at midnight and carries with it restrictions for hospitality including use of terraces to 75%, interiors to 50%, groups sizes of 8 people, and a closing time of 2am. However, these restrictions are alleviated if venues choose to request the Covid certificate (or proof of vaccination from UK tourists) for clients and staff, an option that has been available since last Friday and is in place until January 15th.

Following yesterday’s highest new cases since August, there are now 6,876 active cases in the Canaries, 46 of whom are admitted to ICU and another 238 in hospital wards. There were also three Covid related deaths reported yesterday, pending validation by Public Health today.
