Tenerife and Gran Canaria point to Level 3 after the rise in infections

The increase in infections in the last few days, the proximity of the Christmas holidays, and hospital pressure, may lead to Tenerife and Gran Canaria being raised to alert Level 3 this afternoon (Thursday), as admitted by the Minister of Health, Blas Trujillo, in an interview with Cope Canarias radio this morning.

"There is a high probability that the two capital islands will rise in level this Thursday after the Governing Council meeting," said the minister. The data is heading straight in that direction after a huge increase in infections in recent weeks, which yesterday (Wednesday) marked a new record of 1,207 daily, especially due to the incidence of the Delta and Omicron variants.

“I appeal to social conscience to exercise caution and to follow all restrictions. It is very important that all of the population that is able to be, is vaccinated, and that people continue to use masks, hand gels, and maintain social distancing. If this cannot be upheld, we will have no choice but to take more restrictive measures in the Canary Islands to stop contagion," said Trujillo.

Regarding Omicron, Trujillo confirmed that although there are only 2 confirmed cases in the islands, one in Gran Canaria and another in Tenerife with no relationship between them, there are another 75 suspected positives under study.

In addition, the report on the situation of Covid-19 in the Canary Islands, confirms that the ICUs of the two islands are now at high risk, and on top of that Gran Canaria has 4 parameters at high risk and Tenerife has five.
