Temperatures hit 40.6 degrees in the Canary Islands yesterday

The intense heatwave that is currently affecting the Canary Islands, recorded a maximum temperature of 40.6° Celsius in San Bartolomé de Tirajana in Gran Canaria yesterday, with the highest in Tenerife of 39° in Las Mercedes in Llano de Los Loros.

In other stations of the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), more than 35 degrees was registered in several places including Tejeda (Gran Canaria), El Paso (La Palma), and the Tenerife North airport.

According to the latest forecasts from Aemet, the heat will intensify for today (Sunday), with the entire archipelago now on orange warning with maximums of 39 degrees across the islands.

The General Directorate of Public Health has put Gran Canaria and Tenerife on red notice until Wednesday (August 18th), for health risks due to extreme temperatures, while Fuerteventura, La Palma, Lanzarote and the municipality of San Sebastián de La Gomera will be in orange notice.

PUBLIC HEALTH ADVICE:
The General Directorate of Public Health is making citizens aware of recommendations to face high temperatures, among which are to drink a lot of water or liquids without waiting to be thirsty, avoiding alcoholic beverages and those with high sugar content, as they dehydrate you.

It is also advisable to avoid exposure to direct sunlight and stay in the coolest areas of your home when it is at its hottest, as well as avoiding sports activities, or going outside in the hottest hours of the day.
