Fernando Simón: ‘We are constantly assessing the use of masks in open spaces’

The director of the Centre for the Coordination of Health Alerts and Emergencies in Spain, Fernando Simón, has announced that work is being done to reduce the mandatory use of masks in certain outdoor spaces.

At a press conference this afternoon, he said that if the evolution of the transmission of the coronavirus is homogeneous in Spain, it is preferable that this measure is carried out at a national level and not by regions.

“We are going to have to progressively modify the obligation to use masks and that is something we are working on. We are on target to reach the goal of having 70% of the population vaccinated in the summer, and it is possible that before reaching it, an agreement will be made not to make the use of masks mandatory in some open places”, Simón said.

However, he warned that the use of masks is included in a decree-law of health measures for the pandemic, so it can’t just be changed overnight there is a process and data necessary to support the change of the decree.

For the moment he didn’t want to give an opinion as to whether that would be at the end of June, mid-July, August or September. "It is something that is being analyzed all the time, but ultimately it will have to be decided within the Inter-territorial Council of the National Health System", he added.
