The Ministry of Health insists that no Christmas events have had restrictions reduced

The Ministry of Health of the Canary Islands Government made an official announcement yesterday (Wednesday), informing that "no Christmas event in the Canary Islands has been delimited or had restrictions reduced, and that all municipal proposals are pending evaluation as to whether or not they are feasible to go ahead, or will need to be altered to meet health requirements.”

Many people got wrongly excited and carried away with some of the events announced by municipalities such as La Laguna (Tenerife), misinterpreting that some of their events would be a ‘free for all’ with no distancing, masks, or dancing restrictions, but this is not the case.

After meeting with the Canarian Federation of Municipalities (Fecam) to analyze the existing possibilities to celebrate Christmas events in each municipality, the Ministry of Health has highlighted the collaborative and positive response to the requirements to have municipal events assessed.

They have agreed that all municipalities in the Canary Islands will send their program of events, with the definition of their formats and contingency plans, to the Ministry of Health this week in order for them to evaluate them and then meet again next Wednesday to define how to carry out the events, following health security parameters.

The objective of the Ministry of Health is to achieve a set of criteria based on the epidemiological situation in which the islands are in, and that the planned events can be held safely, avoiding risks of transmission of Covid.

They have also stressed that it should be remembered that the child population is heavily involved in celebrating Christmas and that those under 12 years of age are the least protected against Covid-19 because they have not yet been able to access vaccination against coronavirus, so extra caution in planning and permissions will be taken into account for events that involve kids.
